About this boat

A great deal of design thought went into the Hunter 380 and the market rewarded them. Owners of Hunters love these boats and consistently rate them very high in owner experiences. Why? Shallow draft, a simple rig, minimal sail handling, a cockpit that feels more like comfortable seating in an outdoor patio at a restaurant as it does the seating on a boat; space for non-sailors to be and move around and feel safe and a boat that was designed for taking normal people sailing and having them actually enjoy the process. It features a big, rounded cockpit that can hold a lot of people comfortably at a dock or at anchor. There is an arch over the cockpit that keeps the mainsheet and running rigging out of the way and out of the cockpit. When she heels, she starts off gently before she settles into a tack, and this particular boat is unique with a lower mast and longer boom lowering the center of effort for even less heal in the same wind conditions and never a concern when approaching a bridge on the Inter Coastal Waterway! And down below it delivers exactly what you would expect; private sleeping and reading spaces, and properly enclosed head and a solon area that feel as much like a small comfortable apartment as it does a boat interior. If comfort at the end of a day of sailing is your desire, then this boat nails it. This just may be one of the best boats ever designed for taking non-sailors out for a great day of sailing, or handling the boat solo, whichever is your preference. She's a great coastal cruiser for folks who value comfort over extreme performance, who value simplicity over complexity, for partners where one has a great deal of experience and one has less, and for the owner who wants to expose friends and family to their interest and have them experience a wonderful time.

Ownership Story

Selah was originally purchased in Florida from Hunter Marine by an owner who never gave her a name. He ordered the boat in a secondary rigging configuration offered by Hunter. The original owner quickly decided he did not like sailing and traded for a Viking motor vessel from Galati Yachts in Florida. The current owners bought her from the dealers. They named the boat Selah and had her shipped to Minnesota where she lived and sailed for a number of years. The current owners then began a voyage around the Eastern US following the "Great Circle Route" until they settled in Oriental NC and retired here. Selah has also sailed to Maine and back with multiple trips to the Chesapeake.

When the Vessel was purchased new, the owner wanted to use it on the Great Lakes with ease of navigating bridges. He ordered the vessel with the secondary rigging configuration offered by Hunter Marine. This used a mast height of 44" and a longer boom to maintain sail area resulting in an air draft of 50' above the water.

Benefits Of the Secondary Rigging Option

  • Tenderness and heeling significantly reduced due to a lower center of effort
  • No significant change on a broad reach
  • Downwind performance same
  • Heavy air while underway more comfortable and easier to carry sail
  • Overall feel is less tender, less lively in 20-25 knots and more cruising oriented
  • She'll tolerate higher winds speeds before reefing
  • Less prone to being overpowered in gusts
  • Easier operation for shorthanded crew
  • Additional access to fixed bridges

Some Cons to the Rig

  • Upwind pointing not quite the same
  • Upwind speed in light air likely affected
  • Light air performance good, but not as good as primary rig

The current owners have sailed her for 25yrs in widely varying conditions and have been very satisfied with Selah's rig configuration.
